Muhammad Ali's Gloves
Ali (b. 1942) proved his claim to be "the greatest" time and again. Highlights of his 21-year career include: an Olympic gold medal (1960); his first heavyweight title (1964); his refusal, on religious grounds, to serve in Vietnam, for which he was stripped of his title (1967); his vindication by the Supreme Court (1971); his recapture of the title from George Foreman in Zaire (1974); and an unprecedented third title recovery (1978). Since the 1980s, Ali has fought a continuing battle against a debilitating illness, Parkinson's syndrome. He remains a symbol of courage, independence, and determination.
