Fifty-five delegates from twelve of the thirteen states attended sessions of the Convention (Rhode Island refused to participate). George Washington, a delegate from Virginia, was unanimously elected President of the Convention on May 25, 1787. This printed draft of the Constitution, circulated among the delegates on August 6 for discussion and debate, was Washington's own working copy and shows his annotations.
